Australian Maritime Qualifications

Coxswain

This course equips students with the skills to command with safety and efficiency a commercial vessel of less than 12m and 250kW in propulsion power, engaged in inshore operations. A person who has obtained a Certificate of Competency as a Coxswain is able to act in the following capacities:

  • Master of a fishing or trading vessel less than 12 meters in length and limited to inshore waters (15nm)
  • Engineer on a vessel less than 12meters in length with engines less than 250kW and limited to inshore waters (15nm)

Pre-requisites

There are no entry requirements for the Certificate II, however, experience on and around boats would be an advantage. In relation to your Certificate of Competency there is a Sea Service requirement. To be eligible for the issue of a Certificate of Competency (Coxswain) you must meet the requirements of your state marine authority including satisfactory completion of an approved training program, eyesight and medical tests and approved sea-time.

There are additional short courses that will need to be completed, we can assist or you may have already completed these.

Career Opportunities

Employment in the small vessel sector including tourism, commercial workboats, fisheries and aquaculture.

Duration

Approximately 4.5 weeks (includes 2 Saturdays)

Course Structure

The course consists of units of competency selected by marine authorities from the nationally accredited TDM07 Maritime Training Package.

Modules include

Nautical Knowledge, Engineering Knowledge, Coastal Navigation, Human Resource Management, Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency, and Elements of Shipboard Safety, including First Aid.

Course dates 2010

Rolling enrolment, students can enrol whenever they want, we offer training for each subject one day a week, often this can change if we have group who are needing to get through quicker.

Course location

This course will be delivered in Cairns, with regular site visits to industry outlets
