Australian Maritime Qualifications

MED3

The course provides approved training to the competency requirements for a Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 as described in Part D of the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV).

Successful completion will require competency in units that relate to work defined as aligned at AQF Level 2:

‘Performance of a prescribed range of functions involving known routines and procedures and some accountability for the quality of outcomes. Applications may include some complex or non-routine activities involving individual responsibility or autonomy and/or collaboration with others as part of a group or team’.

Career opportunities

As a MED3 you can act as an engineer on commercial
vessels:

with propulsive power less than 250 kW – within
100 nautical miles (nm) of the coast

with propulsive power 250 kW or more but less
than 500 kW – within 15 nm of the coast.

As a MED 3 you can act as an engineer on fishing
vessels:

with propulsive power less than 300 kW – in the
fishing ship operating area or within 200 nautical
miles of the coast

with propulsive power 300 kW or more but less
than 500 kW – within 15 nm of the coast.


Entry requirements

As determined by the appropriate Marine Authority. Medical and eye-sight requirements apply.

Course structure

The course consists of units of competency selected by marine authorities from the nationally accredited TDM07 Maritime Training Package.

Course dates 2011

Rolling enrolment, students can enrol whenever they want, we offer training for each subject one day a week, often this can change if we have group who are needing to get through quicker.

Course location

This course will be delivered in Cairns, Gladstone and Brisbane, with regular site visits to industry outlets
