Australian Maritime Qualifications

Master 5 / Skipper 3

The course provides approved training to the competency requirements for a Master Class 5 or a Skipper Grade 3 Certificate, as specified by the NSCV and Marine and Maritime Safety Queensland. A person who has obtained a Certificate of Competency as a Master 5/Skipper 3 is able to act in the following capacities:

  1. Master on a fishing or trading vessel less than 24 metres in length within 200 nautical miles of the coast.
  2. Chief Mate on a trading vessel less than 35 metres in length within 600 nautical miles of the coast.
  3. Chief Mate of a fishing vessel less than:
    • 80 metres in length for operations within 200 nautical miles of the coast
    • 35 metres in length for unlimited domestic operations.

The course consists of units of competency selected by marine authorities from the nationally accredited TDM07 Maritime Training Package.
The subjects the course covers: Ship Knowledge, Nautical Knowledge, Navigation and Position Determination, Human Resource Management, Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency, Elements of Shipboard Safety. The course has a strong practical emphasis with students undertaking vessel manoeuvring, towing, person overboard, berthing, lifting, refueling, etc using a variety of vessels:

  • 6 metre dinghy
  • 10 metre sail vessel
  • 16 metre patrol vessel
  • 16.5 metre landing barge
  • 23 metre motor dive vessel

Career opportunities

The Master Class 5 certificate of competency is issued by the appropriate maritime regulatory authority in each state and territory. A Master Class 5 or Skipper Grade 3 certificate allows a person to be employed as master of a commercial vessel up to 24 metres in length, within limits specified by the Marine Authority (usually up to 200 nautical miles from the coast).
